My first 5 star read of the year! This was absolutely unputdownable. It was unflinching and riveting. I almost have no words. The premise is so well executed, there are complex questions it explores and doesn't always fully answer, and it's a terrifyingly immersive view into slavery through a modern lens. Incredible. This was my first Butler, but it definitely won't be my last!

I do not usually like time travel books but, this one was so well written and so powerful that the reader is just drawn in to the story. You will cry, feel joy, and learn too.

A tough read but important. It explores the violence of slavery and the complicated relationships that can arise from it. It explores the boundaries of humanity. It explores the ethics of what is the norm versus what is right. This book will stick with me.
