Wow. That was a heavy read and took an emotional toll. This book is the definition of black trauma, and I purposely avoid that as much as possible. However, I absolutely adore time travel, and knowing that Octavia Butler is the mother of black science fiction was what initially had me add it to my TBR. Once I read the synopsis, I picked up the book right away.

I was immediately sucked into the story. Butler wasted no time with too much backstory or explaining, which I really appreciated. It reminded me almost of magical realism in the sense that
some things are never explained, and I actually think it worked in this story.
The time travel was used as a vessel to deliver the story Butler wanted to share in a way that allowed for built in /more modern commentary on the slave experience.

I thought the character development/adjustment was actually really realistic. It was frightening how easily they were able to explain away or accept the conditions on the plantation.

Although it was hard to read, Kindred captured my attention and held it all the way through, and I know it’s a book I will never forget.

***The book shows it’s age in the unfortunate use of the R word a few times, and of course the N word is used on nearly every page.
*** This is a slave narrative, so be prepared for triggering content such as racism, rape, murder, physical abuse, sexism, and more.
