I started this book before bed last night, and essentially didn't put it down until I finished it tonight! The author's ability to create tension is excellent, and I found myself holding my own breath until she finally loosened things up just in time to crank it up again. Eesh. What a ride!

Cecily Wong, the protagonist in the story, was wonderfully relatable to me. I found myself resonating with her insecurities and desires to prove herself.

I found myself assessing and reassessing who the murderer might be, and while I was 90% sure I had figured it out early, it didn't matter. The journey to the summit and the extra layers of intrigue kept me turning pages, hoping I was wrong. I wasn't wrong, but the journey was woh it. The storytelling moved at a great pace, and things unfolded in surprising, but believable ways.

I do wish the ending chapter had been given a little more time, but it was still fitting. I would have loved some time to cry at the end.

Last, but not least, the depth of technical, experiential, and personal detail had me thinking that the author is either a mountaineer herself, or is hella good at research. Turns out she herself has actually summitted Manusla, the 8th highest mountain in the world (over 8,000 meters), and the setting of this book.

I felt like I was there. The descriptions, details, and atmosphere drew me in, and I swear I could feel the cold, smell the snow, and see the yawning crevasses before my eyes. Totally immersed!

Dudes. I can't even. I loved it!

I’d give this book 2.75 stars, it was easy to read, however, I feel the book lacked on some points. I would have loved more descriptions of the environment and I found certain pieces of the story lacking. Having said that, the characters felt real and developed well. It was good to see the different dynamics, personalities and life experiences so diverse.

I did guess who was responsible early on, however, one outcome gave me the shock factor, which I didn’t see coming. It didn’t give me the ‘quacking in my boots vibe,’ and that intensity that can come with thrillers. So on that note, I’m not sure this is a thriller that I would recommend for avid thriller readers, due to the lack I felt, although maybe an easy read for the preferred occasion.

I felt a little underwhelmed with the ending and would have liked more. Perhaps an epilogue would have been a good addition.

I wanted a thriller and all I got was a boring lesson on mountaineering. Yawn.

3.5 stars. It was a very well written and wonderfully descriptive book. I felt like I was right up there with Cecile, fighting her struggles and insecurities with her. However the page turning thriller wasn't there till the very end of the book. The last 40 or so pages were definitely a vertigo induced page turner, however the rest of the book was more like an adventure novel as apposed to a thriller. Still it was an interesting read and very well written. Would recommend to people without hesitation.

The atmosphere created throughout this is fantastic and it’s clear that the author had experience of similar conditions to write it so convincingly. For me though it was the climbing, the mountain and the atmosphere that put the ‘thrill’ into this thriller because it seemed so obvious who the killer was right from the moment they showed up and I was left thinking ‘eventually!’ when our main character caught on. For the atmosphere alone though this was a great read and maybe I’ve just read too many thrillers/mysteries and that’s why I spotted our killer, lol!
