I absolutely loved this book! I already loved the movie on Netflix so I figured that I would read the book, and I wish that they would have included more of the book into the movie because it was so cute and amazing!

This was definitely the first Y.A. novel I've read in a long time, and I yet again realized how much I was growing out of the genre. This was a very wonderful book written exceptionally well in terms of the Y.A. genre; however, it just didn't meet all of my expectations for this book. I really liked the message behind this book, and I thought that the ending was very sweet, but I just wasn't left in awe. I liked how Murphy pretty flawlessly captured teenage life and the essence of small town living. I would definitely read this book if Y.A. is your thing and you're in that nice little bildungsroman stage of your life. Unfortunately, I don't fit that category and didn't like it as much because of that, but I respect it for what it is.
I want to withdraw my former statement about Willowdean. I had very high hopes for this book, but I was simply underwhelmed by it. Willowdean was very judgmental. She knew she was fat and she accepted it in some sort of way, but she judged Millie and Amanda first solely on their appearance.
The love triangle was oh so predictable and oh so unnecessary. (Mitch was a total sweatheart).
And what was that ending? It was supposed to be the grand finale, and she got DISQUALIFIED. I mean, come on! I was glad she made up with Ellen, but I felt like the story was building up to virtually nothing. I wholly support the message of this book, but it wasn't quite right for me.

I really did enjoy this. It was nice to have a very defined voice, not only a big girl but oh so very Southern. I will be checking out Side Effects May Vary and looking forward to new publications.
