I loved this book .Julie Murphy you get me .One of the best contemporary books last year.
2.5 stars. The first half of this book was just so unnecessary?? And like other reviewers have said, it's not very body positive for a book that's said to be body positive. I liked the movie better

I saw the movie before I knew this was a book, and loved it. Part of me is sad I didn't love the book quite as much as - on the bright side, this makes me really appreciate the writers of the adaptation, because I think they really succeeded in making the best parts of this YA novel shine. The relationships between the contestants, the friendship between Elle and Will, the characters of Lucy and Dolly Parton shining through despite not being actual characters, Bo as a love interest... it just all really worked for me. The long summer before the "actual" pageant action begins and the Mitch subplot kind of diluted the book for me.
That being said, I enjoyed this book, even though - or maybe because? - the German audiobook narrator kept pronouncing the names in absolutely ridiculous ways. Bekah as "B.K."! Tabitha as "Ta-byte-a"! Girl...
Likable characters, relatable emotions and an easy-to-follow plot. Solid four stars.

A heartwarming story that will make girls everywhere smile because any girl can be a beauty queen.
This is cute, but not cutesy , feel-good YA. It's about a teenaged girl named Willowdean, who lives in small town Texas and happens to be fat. She and a few other unlikely girls decide to enter the town's great event, a beauty pageant. The setting is great, the characters are diverse, and interesting, the angst is believable and not overdone, and the romance is sweet. There aren't a lot of body positive books out there; this is one, and it's also a fun read.
WARNING: NO SPOILERS AHEAD, I don't do that! Read it for yourself! <3
This book changed my LIFE! Fat teens are not represented enough in literature, and now that Julie Murphy is writing about them I am so here for it! Texas, Pagents, Fat Girls, Love (some of it not in the romatic way), Queen Dolly Parton, and a strong sense of purpose.
Read this book and be changed!!!!
