3.5 stars, this book is insanely funny at times and heartbreaking at times. It strikes a chord and hits home with any girl/boy who struggled to be comfortable in their skins, however I was left not quenched in the end. Maybe I/ we needed more closures like - SPOILERS***
Did she makeup with Mitch because she would just be another Hippocratic person hiding behind her “I don’t give a shit how I look” kind of confidence ? Is there really a reason for her mom to be a less of a mother than Lucy was for will? Did she change the way how she projects her self loathing on to other people? I know this book has a great moral but I needed to see that it dawned on to the protagonist!

I adored this book I laughed all the way through it. easily relatable and absolutely touching. I want every girl I've ever known to read this and to be able to love themselves as they are a little more.
This is a fun little story with a protagonist who is wonderfully imperfect. She makes decisions I disagree with and has a personality that feels realistic; in fact, all of the characters do something that irritate me and/or make me cringe, and that makes me love this book all the more. I appreciate that it is empowering while also acknowledging the ordinary flaws in people.

Complicated
the movie is good but god the book is way fucking better. more characters & julie murphy lets them be complicated & angry & mean, but you still love them so so much. (queer tag is for the vibes & ensemble, but i do think willowdean is likely straight)
Graphic: Fatphobia
Moderate: Bullying
overall very very positive message but there are instances of fatphobia, including bullying, dieting, microagression-type comments about size & weight loss, and internal insecurity about weight/body shape. but to be clear, the protagonist doesn't take it lying down by any means.
