Interesting story but the language of the time was often hard to follow. Plus the character of the black professor seemed unrealistic at times. The time period was interesting since it involved the revelation of our nation.

I enjoyed this historical fiction about pre-Revolutionary War America. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, and I enjoyed the unraveling of the mystery. I only wish there hadn't been such a preponderance of unnecessary sex. For that reason, I'm not sure I can recommend it.

A mixture of history, romance and mystery. I listened to this and I particularly enjoyed the Scottish voice of one of the narrators.

As a historical reenactor, I am familiar with a lot of the portraiture of Boston in this period. But I definitely hadn't thought of the perspective of the artists often. It was an interesting twist on historical fiction. Also, the time before the revolution was a curious choice, and I happened to be involved with a project about non-importation right now.

The audiobook version I had from my library had a terrific pair of actors who added a dimension that would have been lost to me in the text version, I think. In fact, I may have told friends that I've decided to marry the narrator and move to the 18th century now...

I was a little surprised at the amount of colonial...um...sexy time. And I wondered how that sounded outside of my auto. But we all managed to get through it. And I understood the reclaiming of female power from works of previous eras.

Anyway: I appreciated the historical features and a female hero in a different light. And I could often match the descriptions of paintings with ones that I knew, which was seeing them in a new way too.

I'd like to read a follow up, maybe set a decade later someday. I hope the authors are considering that!

very absorbing :)

Thoroughly enjoyed.

This book took me FOREVER to get though. I wish I could have enjoyed it more because it was well researched (for the most part). I don't pretend to be an expert historian however I did notice some inaccuracies.

I liked the premise of the story and the period politics that were involved in it. But it just took me forever to get through it. I had to force myself through the middle of the book to finish it.

This is a historical romantic bodice-ripper gender-bender part-epistolary mystery involving the literary tools of orphans, mistaken identity, master and bumbling sidekick, cheeky orphans, and evil fathers. Quite enjoyable ultimately but I found it hard to continuously read this. Some aspects might seem quite ludicrous.

A truly one-of-a-kind historical fiction piece set in Boston not long before the Revolution; this is a book to be savoured for its play with and use of the English language - it may not be 100% genuine 18th century prose, but reads so near to it as to make no difference. The story itself is enthralling and well-told. Read it. Really.

I know it's well-researched, but ugh. If I had something else to read, I WOULDN'T be reading this.
A way to write a romance novel while still keeping academic creds? Complete with bodice-ripping scenes! I found it really annoying and I'm not sure why. Over-wrought. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.
