This is an enjoyable dark fantasy. I like the writing and the dark world Marissa has created.  Serilda goes out on the night of the full moon and runs into the Erlking. She tells him she can spin straw into gold to save her life. On the next full moon the Erlking comes for Serilda so she can show him her gift. This begins Serilda's dark journey.

Serilda and Gold's story is a tragic one, marked by a long history of child death. While nothing in this book is overly graphic, there is so much murder of literal children, that I found it just a tad too much to give this one five stars.

I listen to the audiobook of this one, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Serilda and guild are likable. The ending, while setting the stage for a sequel, is very hopeful and fulfilling. Great story, full of very subtle twists.

This was a great one to read! I enjoyed it and it was so much fun!

I enjoyed the first few chapters until right before the last few ones. Those where I enjoyed the introduction to the world, to the German Folklore creatures and not just Rumpelstiltskin. The writing was so good! It was the most atmospheric.

I also refused to believe that this was a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin! I refused! I had no knowledge of this book and have never read any works of Marissa Meyer until this one but have heard of and been in my wishlist for so long! And this made me want to keep on reading here amazing work because if this type of writing is the same within all of her books then I would be happily to swim in it.

The only complaint about that I have to give was the romance. I felt nothing towards it, there was no chemistry there but I understand it. These are two people who had never experienced romantic and yearning love ever, BECAUSE OF REASONS, and they share that common reason. Makes sense to me and I know it might not to others but I do wish to see more interactions between them, a chemistry build up and something to form together in the next book.

First book of the year down. I loved this. I always forget that Marissa Meyer has such a way with words that really makes yourself get lost in the book.  I love retellings and she’s the Queen on them. Can’t wait to jump into Cursed!

Absolutely loved this retelling! It’s pretty dark and I have to be honest, at the beginning, I thought the Erlking would be the love interest or he would at least be part of a love triangle, but oh boy was I wrong… or who knows, maybe in the sequel?! I loved the direction the story took and that even
Rumpelstilskin didn’t know his actual name or his past.
I also absolutely love the foreshadowing of no book containing the history of the castle. It’s VERY evident what will happen in the second book, but hey, it’s YA, so…. that’s okay. I love the direction the story took and can’t wait to read the sequel.
