There's an air of melancholy and nostalgia in the entirety of the book, even during the initial parts of the book when you don't know what you're longing for. You follow Yayoi as she tries to reconcile these bittersweet feelings and figure out why she keeps getting drawn towards her aunt, Yukino.

It was the perfect bittersweet read for me during these past hazy and rainy spring days. I find myself hesitating to recommend this to others as the book does deal with taboo relationships which could put off other readers.

this was a short read. just like the usual banana yoshimoto, you could feel the comfort in her writing, a compassionate understanding of oneself.

and one thing about her writing, she always pulled off writing about the mundanes. the beauty in the daily lives. to gaze out at the window at night. to feel the comfort of sinking yourself in a bathtub, to appreciate the slow and quiet moment. and to feel the warmth in an interchangeably connection with another human.

at the same time, she has to power to make you empathize with the characters. to feel their sorrow. to understand their immense grief. and to recognize their loneliness.

i love her for her sensitivity to things. in the calm exterior of her writing, there's always some depth to it. a poignant and tender exploration of human's intricate emotions. and i especially love this story for the little sparks of mystery in it.
