This book was beautifully written - Yoshimoto's command of language creates a stunning prose that flows elegantly and is spurred on with lyrical descriptions. You really do get lost in the descriptions.

That being said, the characters themselves felt one dimensional and the narrative underdeveloped.

There is an interesting exploration of (rightly) controversial relationships, that being said I think its reductive to say the author supports those relationships- the book is told in the first person narrative from the perspective of one of the individuals in the relationship. It should be self-evident that their commentary on it will be skewed and unreliable.

Yoshimoto touches on the complexity of grief and how it can be debilitating, but again, I think there is a failure to explore this fully.

Overall, beautiful prose, an interesting concept, but ultimately underdeveloped

yoshimoto's writing is really stellar. one of a kind, special.
sure there are parts of the book and the mess where i'm like is that necessary. but she does a good job at making
you feel fore the aunt. and making you understand her flaws. and why she acts the way that she does
. it has a mysterious and beautifully haunting quality. i liked it a lot. one star off just because some themes felt unnecessary, but never self-indulgent like
murakami's women writings or anything.
no, it's not self indulgent. i think it was just experimental.

I did not get on with this one that well! If it was longer I would've definitely dnf'ed it! Didn't like yayoi, none of the writing went in my head, and don't get me started on *that* romance! Not a fan!
