Beautiful writing as always. I was very engrossed in the melancholic yet comforting tone of the story. Not her strongest book, especially considering the problematic romances depicted.

Haunting, strange, and beautiful. Read it in one day on day #3 without electricity after the big windstorm on Dec. 18.

that same bright and clear style but the plot left much to be desired. could’ve been a sweet little story if not for the
weird relationships

other than the two very questionable relationships, i really enjoyed this book. like other banana yoshimoto works, the prose is elaborate and descriptive and makes you feel as though you’re in a dreamlike state. the themes touched on in this book are very heartwarming (aside from the relationships) with family, found family, memory, and superstition. the bond that each person forms with yayoi is heartwarming and you see her train of thought very clearly. my one other problem with the book was the blase sort of reveal of what had gone on. i had to go back and reread the passage(s) several times to understand more of the context clues given but i couldn’t believe the premise of the forgotten memories was revealed in a single sentence, in an off-handed, casual remark by a character. other than that and the relationships, this was an enjoyable read.
