I didn't really have expectations for this book as I only had a basic idea of what it was about and was unfamiliar with the author. I found it to be an odd story that went in a very different direction than I expected -- the aunt seemed like such a negative character, the incest and varied age relationships taboo, that the positive ending really came out of nowhere. I thought there would be more of a statement made about SOMETHING but was left hanging.

Beautifully written by Yoshimoto and kudos to Yonedo on such a thoughtful translation. Some great imagery and lovely phrasing. The set up was strong and I was keen to see where it was all headed, but can safely say the incest storyline and the teacher-student relationship was not on my bingo card and in the end it all felt a bit too problematic for my liking.
