Solid 3.5 stars. It didn't do anything special for me, but I did really enjoy the book. I like the podcast excerpts a lot, and the central "mystery" of the book is enticing. I like the people, I like the relationships between the characters, I like how pretentious Lee can be, I like the plot. There's a lot to like about it, and there were definitely moments that I loved. It was a lovely book to distract myself with, and it had some discussions about queerness and otherness that were in my opinion well done.

It's nice that the older I get, the easier it is to find (YA) novels that treat queerness as acceptable if not unexceptional. This novel even includes a polygamous character, which is nice - I can't recall having read much books with polygamy, and definitely no YA.

literally me as a girl who had a boyfriend but then realized that wow certain girls understood me the way he couldn’t. really good book about being messy but that messiness is beautiful and shows that you’re a person

I really appreciated how this book addressed stereotypes. Stereotypes can be very damaging and negative, but just because a person fits into a stereotype doesnt make them inherently bad or a negative impact on a certain community or sect of people. I liked how things werent perfect in the end. Things were still a mess and Lee wasnt entirely sure what her exact trajectory was. But she had a goal. Something to work towards and something to work for. I liked the openess and honesty she had with Risa and how Risa’s own feelings were addressed. Also really loved her relationship with Max.
One thing that did knock it down half a star is that I was never quite sure what time of day or what day it was. They kinda blurred together and it seemed like she was fitting a lot of activities into one day. Also her insistance at first that her life was not like a book or movie. like girl, take one look at all your circumstances. Like, line em up.
