Such a heartbreaking story of a sisterly bond and miscommunication. It’s so sad that if they had only talked about their decisions before making them, things would’ve turned out so different.
RATING: 2.5 STARS
2020; Park Row/Harlequin
For some reason, I had a notion that this novel was about Suffragettes. It is about women, and their struggles in America during the 1910s. Specifically, this novel takes place in New York and is about the House of Mercy. The House of Mercy is a place where young girls and women are placed for the littlest infraction. Any sexual act could land a girl in this place that punished them with long hard hours in the laundry. The money does not go back into the House of Mercy, and the girls are given enough food to just survive. This is the part of the novel I found most interesting, and now want to learn more about. The story of Effie and mom was okay, but I found myself a bit bored with their stories (along with Effie's older sister, Luella). I did find Mabel's story a bit more intriguing. The stories overall were not as engaging as I hoped. I would have probably DNF if I was reading this book instead of listening to the audiobook. It was not a bad book, it just didn't have a certain oomph to make it stand out and keep you reading.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***

The characters, perspectives, and reasoning seemed a little unbelievable. They were hard to relate to .

Steady read that wasn’t predictable. Nicely written and unique. Nice untraditional read to have come across this month. Would look to read her other work.

Women’s “place” in society as well as how that played into family dynamics was more prominent in this book than history of the House of Mercy in my opinion. It was informative and well researched. The flow of the story kept me interested. I was engaged with the characters through their recollections of past experiences and also with their current situations.
This audiobook was well narrated, and I think that helped a lot for me visualizing the characters. There were different voices for each of the three narrators.
I learned about the time period.
I chuckled at times and was heartbroken at others. I was shocked and angry. I was proud and relieved.

Neither here nor there. Of the main characters, there was one that I couldn't stand. And while I have sympathy for her situation, I still didn't like her and she was the main reason for the loss of 2 stars. I also don't get the name..
