Captivating tragic story about a young girl mistakenly trapped inside a home for wayward girls. I spent much of this story seething angry at all the mistakes that caused her fate—while also in awe of Effie’s strength. Historical fiction based on the real House of Mercy.

This could’ve been better. It took a long time to get to the actual story.

I could not stop listening to this one. It brought to life many of the previously untold stories of the women of this era. Add it to your list!

I was really hopeful that this would be better. It was pretty good I'd say but I kept thinking it would kick into high gear and it never really did. Love the different chapters from different perspectives writing style.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would - but not four stars worth. Two girls from a wealthy family in 1910's New York City rebel against their father's strict upbringing by sneaking out to a nearby Gypsy camp. When the elder daughter, Luella, runs away - the parents don't want to upset the younger daughter with the heart condition - so they tell her that "Luella has been sent away to camp". Effie decides that their father has committed Luella to the House of Mercy for destitute women and incorrigible girls - so she conjures a plan to get herself admitted. Oops! Her plans to join her sister are thwarted because Luella isn't there. Effie is befriended by Mable and the two of them forge a plan to gain their freedom.
The story is narrated by Effie, Mable and Jeanne (Effie's mother). We learn Mable's backstory - the truth of Luella's disappearance from Jeanne and cheer when Effie continues to live despite her heart problems.

I really liked this book, and found myself thinking about it long after I finished it. It was an amazing multilayered story and I really got attached to the characters. I loved the author's writing style and the voices used in this tale really brought the book to life and the plot was such an interesting heart-breaker.

The story is an engrossing one as well as vivid and deeply moving. It's one of those books you cannot put down and immediately wish for more when you are finished. A moving, important and unforgettable read. I absolutely recommend this book.
