The king is dead. The man who killed him has kidnapped Alizeh. Kamran quickly realizes how much his grandfather protected him. Ready or not it's his turn to reign. Unfortunately,  he has no idea who he can trust. Alizeh is shocked when Cyrus announces that he has been ordered to marry her by the devil. Everyone wants Alizeh to agree and become the queen Everyone has been waiting for.  This was a great read. I enjoyed both story lines.

She’d risen up from dust, come to life on a breeze, and left a trail of perfumed flowers in her wake as she ushered in the fall of a king who’d ruled the greatest empire on earth for nearly a century. The true wonder was how she’d done it. Without lifting a finger— without even raising her voice—
She’d simply stood tall, and his world had collapsed.

Once again, Tahereh Mafi has managed to create a vivid, beautiful picture with the most elegant, lyrical prose. The entire book takes place in a single day, but the way that she writes, you find yourself constantly forgetting that so little time is passing, and that so little time has passed since the end of This Woven Kingdom.

Cyrus and Alizeh manage to develop their relationship, and Cyrus showcase his humanity, in a way that is simultaneously fantastical and entirely realistic. Despite the book taking place in less than 24 hours, the growth of their relationship and tentative trust in one another and themselves grows so gradually and fully that it wrenched my heart right from my chest. The language Mafi uses when Cyrus is expressing his fondness for Alizeh — it manages to be subtle and lyrical and sensual, while also just being absolutely gorgeous writing. Their grip on lyrical prose will never cease to amaze me.

Mafi’s choice to have Alizeh step out from behind the door to face Cyrus’s mother, and then have the chapter end and cut to Kamran in the tower… I don’t think I will ever recover from that. And the deliberate parallel between Alizeh falling from the dragon’s back at the end of This Woven Kingdom and this book ending with Kamran, Hazan and their ragtag group of rescuers ascending into the sky on the backs of Simorgh and her children… some of the most beautiful writing that I’ve encountered this year, if not ever.

I’m already waiting with bated breath, on pins & needles for the release of All This Twisted Glory in February

"What is your name?"
"Of all the non sequiturs. Why do you need to know my
name?”
"So that I may hate you more informally."

3/3.5 ⭐️

Did I enjoy the banter between Cyrus and Alizeh? Yes. Did I love the scenes with the side characters, especially sassy Hazan? Yes. Do I wish this didn’t fall into ‘just a filler sequel trap and wish it was fleshed out more’? YES! It was simply okay but could’ve been great.

This. Was. So. Good.

I went into the book very unsure because I knew there would be a love triangle probably and I had liked Kamran so much in the first book I didn’t even want to read about another love interest. But I have no idea how Tahereh did it because now I can’t stop thinking about Cyrus. I’m conflicted because we now barely anything about him and his motivations for his actions but he intrigues me so much and the tension between him and Alizeh was 🫢🫢. Now Im just confused because I still like Kamran but now I’m super interested in Cyrus too and I have no idea what Tahereh is going to do! I’m afraid she’s going to make me hate Kamran in the third book and I don’t want her too because I LOVED him in the first book. And still really do in this one. But Cyrus’s character was SO GOOD.
I wish I could separate the two books in my head so I could be invested in Alizeh and Kamran in the first book and Alizeh and Cyrus in this one BUT I CAN’T.
I think Kamran is going to get another love interest in the third one and Alizeh and Cyrus are going to end up toguether because there is no way those two aren’t head over heels for each other (I believed the same about Kamran and Alizeh in the first book 😭😭). Truly I just want them all to have a happy ending.
I do understand that if you like plot heavy books you probably won’t like this one because it is true that very little happened in it. But idc because I was so invested in everything else too much.
First fully 5 ⭐️ of the year I think.

Tahereh Mafi just does it for me every time. I don’t think I can wait until next year for the final book.

ALIZEHCYRUS ENDGAME IDC. At first, I was like “Nooo, I hate Cyrus. Give me Kamran, I love Kamran” but then, after finishing, I was like “Wait…who’s Kamran???” (Still love him though). I do like Alizeh and Cyrus better together because I felt like they had more of a connection. Kamran, I felt, only wanted to be with her because she’d make a good queen, but Cyrus wants to be with her because she’s her. If that makes sense. I’ve actually never seen a man on his knees for a woman like this in my life, and I am absolutely living for it.

Tahereh Mafi always seems to make me fall for murders… It’s really bad… I also don’t know how she’s made me fall for a blond and now and ginger man. It’s like her specialty.

This is by far the best sequel I have ever read. Usually, sequels don’t live up to my expectations, but this one exceeded them.
