Addie is autistic and she would very much like people to stop treating her autism like a disease, thank you very much. The trouble is, her teacher and classmates refuse to see past their prejudices and see the real Addie. When the young girl discovers the history of her village, and especially the witch trials that sentenced to death women just for being different, she launches a campaign with all her might to acknowledge the errors of the past and do what is right.
Honestly, this book should be handed out everywhere for everyone to read. It's so touching, infuriating, heart-warming and important. Elle McNicoll writes an entertaining story with a lot to consider as a neurotypical reader about biases and perspective.
Rep: autistic MC (own voice).

EXCEPTIONAL. I highly recommend the audiobook version especially. Elle McNicoll has written Addie so lovingly — she is such an inquisitive, empathetic tween — and the soft-spoken Scottish narrator really brings her to life.

Sometimes a book just punches you right in the gut. A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll punches you in the heart, too.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Addie is 11, autistic, and starting a new school year with a teacher who seems to hate her for being autistic. She shares a bond with her older sister Keedie who is also autistic, and who had similar experiences with the same teacher. Addie’s class is learning about her village’s history of witch hunting and execution, and feels so strongly connected to the women who were tortured and killed just for being different. She works through bullies, naysayers, and negligent bystanders to stand up for what she believes is right for herself, the future, and the past.
Beautifully written by a neurodivergent author, this #middlegrade #novel was touching, infuriating, sweet, and inspiring. Addie was a wonderful main character with so much love to give and I think 4th and up would have a lot to learn from her.

You know that tender, magical feeling when a book breaks your heart, gently picks up the pieces and then stitches it back up in a way that leaves you feeling utterly transformed by the experience?

This book did that, and more. I can't even begin to describe the emotions I'm feeling right now, but if I had to recommend just one book to you? It would be this one.

It's fiercely powerful, quietly joyful, and owns my heart completely.
