On the surface, it is a love story between a 3 or 4-thousand year old serial murderer and a 3 or 4-centuries old healer with super human strength and shapeshifter abilities, and like any good love story, they kind of hate each other. Set at the height of the chattel slave system, it moves from Africa to colonial America and gets all into the psychological side of domination/submission, patriarchy and some other confusing stuff...

I read her "Parable" series decades ago and I'm still mulling that one over, so I expect I won't really "get" this book for a while either.

Very strong start to a series. Having read some of her other novels, I can tell this is one of Bulter's earlier works based on how often she departs from the story to give background information, sometimes in the middle of an action sequence. Still, a page turner!
