Would not recommend for kids/teens because of many problematic/disturbing behaviors from a main character, but I really enjoyed it! It was an intriguing plot, interesting characters, and had a mostly satisfying ending. I loved seeing characters grapple not only with  fantastical elements but also the side effects of those! Very thought-provoking!

A masterpiece; after this, Kindred, and Parable of the Sower I'm really gonna have to go read everything Butler ever wrote 😭

The two main characters, Doro and Anyanwu, seem like embodiments of conflicting ideas. It is hard to understand their relationship or their emotions. They are playing some kind of eugenics game with all the other characters, but without respect to skin color, gender or national origin. Anyanwu cares a little bit more about the "lesser" beings under her protection but not enough to stop getting entangled with the sociopathic Doro. Butler does some very interesting things here but in the end I was left unsatisfied.
