I liked this much more than the first book of the series. There was still an ensemble cast, but the points of view felt slightly more solid. The ending wasn't great, but pretty typical.
Really loved it, ending was a bit shaky, but it's understandable why it is the way it is.

Although it references a lot of elements from the first book this really is an in-universe sequel rather than a proper story sequel. Nothing near as high stakes as the first book but I really enjoyed it as just a fun, happy read.

Very fun.
Rarely have I wished for a third book more than I do now. I imagine it would have taken place a decade or two later, chronicling the new wizards of the world l, Policant's students of course, and all the less-than-everyday magic they perform. Perhaps some kind of world hopping adventure starring Derk's grandkids of many shapes and sizes, and their friends, testing the limits of magic and investigating what lies beyond their world.

Unfortunately, there never was a sequel, but many more books of a similar vein to read. I didn't think I'd like this one as much as I did. While it focuses too heavily on the romantic relationships of its characters, it was fun! I'm left wanting to know more about magic and wizardry; apart from some unsuccessful (or maybe too successful?) cooperative magic and reflection on the possibilites, the book was lacking much evidence of its theorized potential. Instead, everyone's paired off and it ends. Satisfactory for some, but I never gave that kind of thing a second thought, you know?

A feel-good, funny adventure full of Diana Wynne Jones’s wit, charm, and incredible imagination. I adored all the silly magic and ridiculous situations these characters ended up in. Jones is easily one of my favourite authors.
