This was so different from what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it. It has the kind of protagonist that would normally be hard to like, but he's in such a despicable world you want him to tear everything down. 8/10.

A tightly plotted tale that is riveting in the moment. Ben's experience as a contestant on The Running Man out of sheer desperation due to being unemployed as well as blacklisted and in need of money for his family is interesting, and it's exciting to simply follow him through it all. There are several terrifying parallels that can be drawn from this fictitious world to the one that we live in today, such as rising violence and media manipulation. However, since the plot is so focused on everything currently unfolding, there isn't much space to dig into Ben's head and really understand him, which made it tough to fully invest in his fate. There are details in the book that haven't aged well, including the usage of several derogatory slurs and Ben randomly ogling a woman who he takes hostage when he should have more than enough to occupy his mind. Also, I hate it when introductions spoil the ending as King himself does here; either keep the content without spoilers or move it to the end of the book to be read afterward.
