Well, Simmons really knows how to surprise people. When writing SF, that is. I've had some mixed experience with his horror novels, Song of Kali being amazing in every aspect while Terror is mind-numbing boring from somewhere from the middle of the book on.

This could be a stand alone book and it is uniquely interesting in style and perspective. Not only are you enjoying some good horror from Simmons with good pacing, characters, and setting, but Duane! I really enjoyed the perspective shifts (told from varying viewpoints) in addition to the characters struggle with time and reality, which by the end are more scary than any boogeyman. I really enjoyed this second novel and would recommend Simmons to anyone that loves reading. His books (in general) are quite long but worth the read.

This was a beautifully written tale of a haunted man. The atmosphere alone was great, and when you add in the mythology surrounding the Black Dogs and Anubis it becomes an even more interesting tale

3.5? 3.75? idk.

I entered this book without any prior context of the universe it is set in. I didn't now the characters, I didn't know the history of the town, etc. On top of this, it was my first Dan Simmons read. Overall I liked it! I thought that he handled the supernatural a bit differently than I've seen before, and I enjoyed the change of pace there. The excessive amount of Old English threw me for a loop, as I skimmed over it not knowing what I was reading until it was explained to me in the next paragraph. All around a good haunting though, and it has inspired me to start his first book in the town, Summer of Night.

If you want the crap scared out of you, read a horror novel by Dan Simmons. I've been a fan since reading CARRION COMFORT a long time ago.
This one draws you in and holds on until the end. Dale Stewart has a battle on his hands, both his questionable mental stability and the evil that humans can inflict.
He thinks to escape his current turmoil of a home life in Montana by going back to a childhood town and an abandoned house so that he can get back to some semblance of normalcy. It turns into anything but.
I read this in the company of other people with all the lights on. This was not as a bedtime read. Nope, nuh-uh. Winter, frigid temperatures, noises in the night, spectral black dogs, ghosts.....
I can definitely recommend this book

A Winter Haunting is the sequel to Dan Simmons super fun paranormal thriller, Summer of Night. I really enjoyed both books but for different reasons. And, although, you don't have to read Summer of Night first, I do recommend it. The two books are stand alone creepy good fun in their own way. Summer of Night is a story about six boys who are childhood friends and their small midwestern town that is being tormented by an otherworldly villain. It has some nuances to the Netflix series Stranger Things as well as Stephen King's Stand By Me. A Winter Haunting is the return of one of the boys, Dale, now an adult who has seen his own share of real life trauma, to the hometown and actual farmstead of one of characters in the first book- his best friend Duane. While the first book really pushes the paranormal limits the second book brings some adult fears into light and creates a few living ghosts who will keep you reading with the lights on. The old abandoned farmhouse in the middle of nowhere that doesn't have electricity and does have an entire upstairs that has been boarded up for unknown reasons is pretty much the perfect setting for a haunted house. When the hounds show up and the messages start appearing on the computer ~ don't say I didn't warn you! Good ghostly fun! Definitely worth a read!

Hmm. Well. Quick read but...not really sure about the plot lines.
