Do NOT waste your time!  I’m sure Goldman’s unusual method of pretending to include just “the good parts” of someone else’s story, with plenty of interrupting personal asides, were a fresh idea in the 1970s, but it seems dated and boring in 2015.  Just enjoy the movie version; he wrote the screenplay.

not as good as the movie.  While it has the story within the story, I found the author's insertion of his fictional self in the story as a distraction more than anything.

I loved reading this! It was a throw back to the past with many delightful details added. The last chunk ... I skimmed it, it was not for me.

One of those rare occasions where the movie is significantly better. It’s fun, but it feels like a bloated draft of the movie script most of the time. And my edition comes with a forward and afterwards of sorts which are both incredibly enjoyable and make me dislike the author as a person.

Just a truly unique and refreshing reading experience. I’ve never read anything like it before. Literally sometimes impossible to tell fiction from reflection.

By now if you have tried any of my top rated books you probably understand that my rating philosophy is a little unorthodox. I read and enjoy nearly every genre imaginable and my 4 and 5 star reads tend to reach those levels for a multitude of reasons. As a 75+ book per year reader I do not give many 4+ star ratings and a 5 star is even more rare. This one is a perfect example of an unorthodox 5 star that blew my socks off not because the story telling made me emotional or because it had me looking over my shoulder after reading it, but because it truly was a reading “experience”. You had to experience the book rather than simply read the words on the pages. Yes, this review is purposefully vague because I refuse to ruin even a single word for any of you. However, I have 3 requirements if you go read this book after seeing my review:
1. This review is specific to the 30th anniversary edition of the book. (This is very important).
2. Watch the movie first. (This will likely be the only time in my life that I would tell anyone to do this).
3. Do NOT google ANYTHING until you finish the entirety of the book. Then and only then must you google all of the things. (It might help to make a list of things you want to look up as you go so you don’t forgot anything or the thoughts you had while reading.)

Enjoy!!
