I've always been an advocate of reading the book first, but when the movie came out in 1987, I was six and had no idea it was based on a book (and shame on my Dad for not finding it and reading it to me). I loved the movie, and my familiarity with it (having watched it dozens of times) did not dampen my love for the book one bit.

The movie is one of the most faithful adaptations of a book I have ever read. Most of it is lifted directly from the book, which is wonderful, and I wish could be said about more movies that are adapted from great books. I was giddy that my two favorite quotes from the movie were also in the book. (These are pretty obvious quotes, and could have hardly been left out, but I am still including them below because I love them. Deal with it.)

"I AM THE DREAD PIRATE ROBERTS AND THERE WILL BE NO SURVIVORS."

"Hello," he said. “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Now that I am finished with the book, I really want to watch the movie again -- it is a truly perfect story.

I saw the movie first; maybe that's why I didn't enjoy the book so much. Maybe, maybe not. Ah, so I did gain something from reading 400 odd pages of White Teeth after all!

I listened to this on audiobook, and I’m pretty sure I got the abridged version. It was still great, but felt a little rushed/like I was only getting the parts that were featured in the movie

Funniest, sweetest, most feel good book that exists. I watched the movie first. And I thought, the book can't be as good or as funny and its even better. Why did I doubt it? This was the first book I've ever read that was truly funny. This is a regular beach/vacation read for me because it just makes me happy!

I had heard so much about this book. Probably too much. It was not bad, not at all, but while kinda funny, I was "meh - what's the fuss?".

Oh well at least I understand some of the quotes now. ;)
