I would call this a rare, vanishingly rare instance of the movie being better than the book, but the movie is so good that it's really not saying much about the book. It was especially charming to get the audiobook read by Rob Reiner. Highly recommend! You can always watch the movie again afterward.

A fun read, and I can see how the movie turned out so well (better, in fact, than the book). Sometimes I felt that Goldman's meta-narrative added a lot and other times I thought it broke the flow even when his reason for cutting part of Morgenstern's story at that point was to improve the pacing. Still, it only detracted from my enjoyment a couple of times, so 95% of the book is gold.
