This book changed the way I think about myself for the better. I wish I had read this years ago!

This took me a while to read, due to the emotionally intimate nature of the content. Being told you're healthy and normal just the way you are brought me to tears multiple times.

It really changed the way I understand sex. Learning about the basics of how your brain works, how interconnected different parts of our life are (especially the impact of stress!) and unlearning all the bullshit you're taught growing up was revolutionary. There were so many chapters which explained the mysteries that me and friends have conversed and mulled over for years!

This book also made me really fucking angry at all the harmful and incorrect messages me and other woman have received from society. I think reckoning and processing my anger was part of why it took me so long to read this.

The personable tone was perfect. I enjoyed the science communication being paired with personal anecdotes which humanized these findings and looked at ways people have applied them in their lives.

The main caveat of this novel is it's focus on cis-gendered woman. Whilst there are insights which are relevant to everyone, cis-gender woman are definitely the focus.

I listened to this pretty quickly as an audiobook, which was right for me—the pop science style and the cis-woman focus (which she explains is due to the lack of more extensive research on broader gender and trans experiences) don’t sit right with me, but I (somewhat begrudgingly? but also not?) have to admit some really key and helpful things came through for me. I dislike the pop science tendency to simplify everything, but ended up being impressed by the complexity that she built up over the chapters, while keeping concepts accessible and understandable. I also actually really appreciated the way that she addressed sexual trauma history without centering it in such a way that all the rest falls away, and it becomes about “fixing” your trauma before you can be capable of enjoying sex (or even having enough agency to *have* consensual sex). It ended up kind of annoyingly agreeing with what my therapist has been banging on about forever, that I’m “not broken” etc etc
