Read for English Poetry II: From Pope to today. This was sort of disappointing to read after Wordsworth but I still appreciate the raw emotions Tennyson is able to communicate.

Non sono mai stata un amante della poesia, più che altro perché molto spesso non riuscivo a capirne il significato e avevo quindi sempre bisogno di leggere le analisi fatte da altri e questo lavoro mi annoiava quasi sempre. Recentemente ho deciso di fare un viaggio alla scoperta dei classici della letteratura inglese e per rendere questo viaggio completo non potevo di certo lasciare in disparte la poesia. Questa è stata la prima opera poetica che ho letto, tra quelli che ho scelto e devo dire che mai ero stata così in errore. Quest’opera mi ha aperto gli occhi verso un mondo che un tempo trovavo tanto noioso e senza senso. Ho letto questo poema tutto d’un fiato e per la prima volta sono riuscita a comprendere il significato di ogni singola poesia, guardando solo qualche volta la spiegazione di qualche verso. Per la prima volta sono riuscita a comprendere i sentimenti del poeta. Quest’opera seppur esprima il dolore del poeta per la morte del suo caro amico, a me ha trasmesso molta speranza e amore. Spero vivamente di poter trovare anche io un amico/a così a me caro da poter condividere il forte amore che Tennyson provava per Arthur. Detto questo, consiglio vivamente la lettura di quest’opera, non è per niente noiosa o ripetitiva, si sono molte poesie, ma in ognuna c’è sempre qualcosa di nuovo.

3.5. I'm not a poetry person and typically don't enjoy it. However, I did enjoy this. It was so heartbreaking but so beautifully done, it got a bit repetitive but that makes sense. Shout out to my friend Megan for procuring a reading guide off of JSTOR for me, otherwise I definitely would've gotten frustrated.

This poem was absolutely gorgeous: the kind where you have to stop every few pages to underline and re-read a stanza or two. After they death of a close friend, Tennyson struggled to make sense of things in a time where new scientific findings were creeping up on faith and religion. He wrestles with grief and confusion and struggles to find faith in God in the midst of this unrest and tragedy, and the resulting poem is hauntingly beautiful and at times, quite devastating. Yet, it is undoubtedly a masterpiece, and certainly a work I will revisit.
