A well paced read, Gretel is a character you can't help rooting for despite her past.

Really enjoyed this. It's a lighter read and I easily finished it in a week. The book questions whether we should be judged for the good we do vs. good we don't do. The characters are flawed and conflicted and this is fitting for our times. Great read.

Outstanding! This is definitely one of the best books I‘ve read so far!!!
A thrilling and stirring sequel of the author‘s masterpiece „The Boy in the striped pyjamas“.
Boyne himself describes his book as a novel about guilt, complicity and grief and it concretizes in an impressive way how profoundly National Socialism has branded several generations. Gretel‘s viewpoint which embodied not only her childhood as the daughter of a cruel Nazi commandant, but also her early adulthood and eventually her reflective thoughts as a 91-year old is impressive. Even though she is constantly trying to cover or change her identity, in the end she was never able to outrun her dark past.
Many scenes in the book have left my mouth open and i was speechless. The brilliant storytelling strategy made the book an absolute page turner and i would deeply recommend it to anyone to read it for themselves!🫧
