With Fire in Their Blood starts almost like a fairytale with the arrival of the MC, Lilly Deluca, in Castello—an Italian town shrouded in mystery where her father got a new job. The fairytale vibe is dispelled soon enough as we meet the other characters, Lily's classmates, and learn a bit of the town's history.

Much like in Romeo and Juliet, the town is split in two (in the past, it was quite literally divided by a wall), and each half of the town is ruled by a family, one by Paradisos and the other by the Marconis. The town is governed by the General, and the peace between the two sides is frail at best. According to the truce, crossing the boundary line is illegal, considered treason, and would earn the trespasser a death sentence. Things get a little muddled for a while. An annual dance is the only occasion where the two sides are allowed to mingle. Of course, violence ensues; from what I understand, that happens every year. Why would the General allow an event where people who hate each other can legally assault one another? Although it seemed that the aggression was one-sided. I also didn't understand why those abused would attend the party yearly (unless it was mandatory and I missed it).

As you probably guessed by now, there will be some trespassing, but I won't give any spoilers. Kat Delacorte created a haunting setting for her story and put the characters through the wringer. It took me a while to get into the story because I found it hard to connect with Lilly. But I imagine it would be much easier for a teenager. If you can suspend your disbelief, you will thoroughly enjoy this story.

This has been an anticipated read and my goodness, was I right. I loved this book. It was definitely a 'Michaela Book' and I will make this my personality and own as many copies as I physically can without my loved ones being worried.
The plot? amazing. The conflicts? Astounding. The Love interests? I had no clue whether to root for the sassy but kinda red flag girl, the brooding man or the really invested man.

Lilly’s father gets a new job, which requires them to move overseas to Castello, Italy. Lilly discovers that this town isn’t regular on her first school day. The town is divided by the two rival mafia clans, the Marconis and the Paradisos, and is led by the General. On her first day, the enforcers came into the school and took blood samples of all the students. Soon, Lilly discovers this is to determine whether there are Saints in the class. From here on, Lilly is on a quest to discover all the town’s dirty secrets and along the way, she also discovers many secrets about her own family.

I went into this book completely blind, and let me tell you, I was blown away. So this book falls under the supernatural romance genre, which I honestly had no idea what to expect. But I was obsessed after the first 10%, which does not usually happen to me. Especially when it comes to the first book in a series. What I enjoyed in this book is that it was different from any other book that I have read thus far. I was beyond curious to figure out what would happen and what all the dirty little secrets were, but then also the romances in this book were very interesting, and I had many hopes for the romances in this book. The only thing is that this book ended on a cliffhanger, and the second book in this series has not been announced yet.

I loved the setting, I don't think that I have ever read a book with this kind of setting before. I need the second book after that ending.

My thoughts:
It’s been a while since I read a ya fantasy. I was so looking forward to read this one. I mean look at the cover! Isn’t pretty? However, I find myself didn’t really enjoyed the story. Bummer.

With Fire In Their Blood follows a story about Lily who moved to a secluded town with her father.

When I started the book it was so good and intriguing. I love reading about the remote town. But, I couldn’t connect with Lily. What I didn’t like was that she fell in love in every single people that she met. Also it was kind of annoying because she was impulsive and harsh.

The book was slow in the beginning and it picked about half of the book. The world building was good but I didn’t felt attached with the characters. Is it bad that the only character that I like and interested was the General. Considering that he was the bad guy?

I felt like there was a book two because of the ending. Not sure if I’m going to read the next one. Depends on my mood I guess and hoping for character development for Lily if there’s second book.

Thank you to @times.reads and @putrifariza for the gifted copy!

I didn't hate this book.
It was objectively fine.

Buuuuuuut I think the pacing was off. Barely anything happened the first like 200 pages and then everything happened in what felt like half a day (It was more spread out timeline wise but it felt rushed).

Also didn't enjoy how dumb our main character was. She is forced to move to a town that barely exists to the rest of the world, learns there is magic and they have a dictator and there's weird ass blood testing in SCHOOL (can u even call that a school?) and somehow she just trusts everyone's word?? Like, girl. Keep things to yourself and also you've known these people for like 2 weeks. Calm down.

I didn't mind the little twist on the Romeo & Juliette plot but I've also read better books inspired by this "two families at war" idea.

Thank you so much to Netgalley for sending me an advanced copy of the With Fire In Their Blood
by Kat Delacorte.

I had such a fun time reading this novel, I loved the setting and all the characters. And of course, I loved the representation in the novel. I am a massive gothic fan so this book just slightly tipped into this and I enjoyed that.

The magic system, world-building, and dystopian elements are incredible in this novel.

this book was enjoyable and i really liked the idea of it. at time it was very predictable - particularly the end parts but it was still a good book.
nico gave me life tbh he was my fave, and i did love the main character. Kat Delacourte created a cast that were all beautiful and i’m so here for it tbh.
