So fucking good. Genuinely beautiful writing style and incorporation of old texts and translations. This was a really cool look into colonization of china by the British and the author executed it perfectly. The characters are all so dynamic and engaging, I hate that griffin ramy and Anthony died. All at the same time. God damnit.
I absolutely loved this book. Very captivatingly written, I really empathised with all of the characters. The use of language and translation was so interesting and unique and this theme ran throughout both in the literal translations that the characters discussed but also in how they communicated with each other. The impact of colonialism across the empire was brought to the forefront with the scenes in Canton highlighting the effect of the political landscape on the lives and livelihoods of the everyday people. I found Letty's character to be particularly striking as an example of the many people who refuse to fully explore and understand the problems caused by society and it illustrates the type of behaviour that allowed, and indeed continues to allow atrocities to occur. I felt fully immersed in the storytelling and and enjoyed the histories of the words and languages that were provided. I was emotionally invested in the characters and their development and felt their pain when forced to make difficult decisions in the name of revolution. A very important read!

love this so much!!! it really lives up to the hype!!! i was scared it would be too difficult to read but it wasn't really that hard. as someone who loves languages and have wanted to work in translati9n before, this was very dear to my heart. loved the slice of life and academia e theory parts and also the revolution. the characters are very precious to me. so so well written!!! became of of my faves
