So many thoughts. Ultimately this book hit many themes I’m used to/ I actively seek out, but through a lens I’ve never read from. Babel is rooted in topics of classism, equality, and colonialism, but told through digestible nuance and language that makes it a nearly universal experience.

I’ll end with my own words: White fragility only upholds racial inequality. Recognize and listen to your friends of color.

Anyways, thank you Ms. Kuang! 🙇‍♀️

Would give it 6 stars if I could

This is an epic tale of language and colonialism. Beautifully written and filled with big ideas. The characters and story were compelling till the very end.

I really loved the world building of Babel itself. The best thing about this book was its characters, but I didn’t get enough of Ramy or Victoire except in their brief POV chapters. I cried when I was supposed to cry, though, and the ending was a good mixture of hopeful and realistic (maybe a little too hopeful since we are two centuries past this time period and know that nothing changes that easily). Still an interesting allegory/depiction of imperialism that is simplistic, but compelling.
