I have been a big fan of all of Pierce's book, zooming through them each time they come out. I generally think that the sequel series has been better than the original triology (which some people would find very surprising).
This book was strange for me. I found the pacing to be off compoared to the other books. Part II, which is supposed to be some of the highest action, fastest part of the series, felt like it dragged on for me. And the ending felt like it kept sputtering on, with jolts that to me seemed like they should have been spread out over a few more chapters happening in an instant.
But I still think that this was a great book. It was a great return to deep character relationships. The reason I love Pierce's writing is that his characters act like people. They generally do things that make sense (apart from when he has written himself into a corner). They act in ways that don't just seem like the author speaking, but the person that he has built.
I'm excited for the final conclusion in the next book and will propbably re-read the whole series again before that.

"In life, it is very tempting to forget the past to try and make a perfect future. But the past and the pain we have endured...they make us who we are.
This is probably the best book in the series so far. It feels so polished in all aspect. Pierce Brown's passion for the characters and world he's created just bleeds through the pages. The character dynamics have never felt more profound. Pierce manages to expertly tackle grief and the passage of time through the interactions and inner monologues of the characters in a very emotional and heartfelt manner. This book cuts deep, at several points.

I also know that Pierce mentioned he initially went down the wrong path for this book when he began writing it. I think he said he wrote over a million words total, but this book only ended up being about 250,000 words. Considering he took the time and effort to find what this book needed to be, I greatly appreciate what the final product delivered. And it was EXACTLY what it needed to be after the depressingly grim tale of Dark Age.
I physically cannot wait for Red God. That book is going to be unreal.

My heart hurts, even more than Dark Age. Lysander is awful but masterfully written. Darrow and Lyria are much improved. I love this series so freaking much!
