This gothic mystery shines a light on the horrors of French colonialism in Vietnam, and seamlessly blends supernatural elements with the protagonist's personal story of discovering herself, identity, and family. I love that as the book unfolds, you never quite know what is real and what isn't, and it's rich in description and atmosphere (and bugs. A lot of bugs)

I liked how the book was written and spoken (listened to the audiobook!) my only criticism is that I wish that one of the hydrangea parts of the book broke down the significance of it. I had to look it up around the halfway point. Hydrangeas are associated with love and gratitude.
At one part towards the end the way the voice actress yelled/screamed “NO” scared me. It was my favorite part of the book.

she is a haunting was a really good read, and there are some parts that i absolutely adored. however, something (and idk what that is unfortunately) is stopping it from being a five star read and i'm not quite sure if it's me or the book. either way it's great and i'm definitely going to read anything else trang thanh tran writes
