It's funny. The first time I read this book, we were dreaming about buying and repairing a run-down property. I distinctly remember hitting a point in the audio where I couldn't read it anymore as I drove out to look at a half-collapsed home in the woods, not because the book wasn't good, but because it wasn't the right time for it. Because upon re-reading, it was fantastic. Hungry ghosts, parasites, mind control fungus. Just, it had everything, even a side of sapphic romance and a hefty dose of rumination on identity and diaspora. So glad I came back to this one.
Finishing this book was the perfect way to start Spooky Season. I really enjoyed this and it went in directions I couldn't predict. Always kept me on my toes.

This book has been on my TBR for ages and I finally got around to it. I wanted to like it but it dragged on so much, information presented was somehow both confusing and also repeated too much? The book could have been a good 50 pages shorter. The characters weren't gripping and the romance was not very romantic at all. Good as a commentary on colonialism.
The hauntings and mood was great up until we find out too much about the ghosts, then the general mediocrity of characters in this book ended up also affecting them. The bug horror got to me tho, I was squirming.

I wanted a scary book and this just didn’t satisfy. I guess the story was interesting enough for me to keep going but it wasn’t that exciting and I feel like there were so many plot holes that I was kind of confused at times
