good read but the story kinda drags on for a while

I really liked this book. it immediately drew me in and i enjoyed every second of it.

Okay so I’ve finished this book, it may have taken me quite a while but it was worth it! For many reasons:

- includes LGBTQ+ stuff
- based in the UK:
• goes through life as a study worm
• different characters that all unite from different backgrounds, some not knowing what to do with their life (makes me feel re-assured lol)
• how personal life can interfere massively with our mental health & how that can affect our social lives
- follows the POV of a person of colour <3
- the ending of this book, LITERALLY puts your heart at ease.

But some stuff like:
- forgetting how the main character looks (or any of the other characters apart from one)
- the first part of the book being so slow paced & quite frankly boring.
- not having any relatable moments with the side characters :/

made it not a 5 star rated book

“I wonder- if nobody is listening to my voice, am I making any sound at all?”

I definitely read this book at a perfect time in my life, the struggles the characters were going through were ones I could relate to heavily and it made it a lot easier to connect to the characters personally. I just want to give them all a hug, god, the characters in here are everything.

I also really like how much Alice managed to blend different tones together. There was definitely the darker and more serious aspects in here, much like what is present in all of Alice’s books. However despite that, it still remained an overall hopeful book within the way it was written. The whole storyline with Frances realising her life plan was something that she didn’t really want anymore really connected with me since I was in a similar position. I love that it was never portrayed as a bad thing to realise, it was so comforting. I also like that despite having romantic scenes throughout this it was very much a book about friendship at its core. A book about finding your found family and the people who care for you and make you happiest.

I also can’t make this whole review without giving a mention to Aled’s coming out scene near the end, and even though it was a small thing it meant a lot to me as an ace person.

Was it just me or was this book entirely too long? I love her characters (usually), but this one was not my fave.
