He is totally talking about me here: A number of readers admitted to knowing that Chasing the Boogeyman was a work of fiction when they first started turning the pages, only to eventually find themselves taking a break in order to Google names and places and incidents to verify their actual existence.
- Stephen King once wrote: “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, did you?
- So yes, you could say that my twelve-year-old brain was busy. But there was another reason I so often chose such a solitary existence. I'd learned that it was easier to find magic when no one else was around.
- I am amazed at how those memories differ, what time and wishful thinking have done to our youth. Once again, I'm reminded that the past is a tricky beast and not to be trusted.
Sometimes you just have to accept things the way they are and move on. Otherwise, you lose the best part if yourself by never allowing yourself to be happy...or content...or at peace.
- Some of the inmates have a kind of vibration about them. It almost feels like when you are too close to a transformer and your little hairs start tingling? There's a buzz there, a nasty one.
- I wish I could explain to you how we were before, but I can't, because the before is so filmy and shadowed by the after.
- When faced with the choice of doing the right thing or the easy thing, always do the right thing, no matter how difficult it is.
- I’d never done well with crying women. They scared me.

This is the second book in the boogeyman series and I really liked the first one. It’s a unique true crime story mixing fiction and reality which was something that I had never seen before. I had high hopes for this sequel that unfortunately weren’t completely met.
The book was still an interesting and unique mix of fiction and reality, but this one felt more far fetched and unrealistic than the first. I did really like that it took place in Maryland, which is where I live so I recognized a lot of the places mentioned. This story also felt a little less cohesive than the first one and some parts were really engaging while others were pretty slow. Chizmar’s character also made questionable choices throughout the story that made him pretty unlikable to me, and constantly name dropping Stephen King started to bother me.
I’m pretty sure this series is going to get another entry and I will probably read it because I like its unique storytelling, but I don’t know what can be done in a third book. I’ve seen people say they enjoyed this one better than the first book, but it felt like this book lacked something that the first one did not.

Is Richard Chizmar friends with Stephen King? I could use another 15 reminders.
Becoming the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar is one of my favorite reads this year. It is the perfect story for spooky season but also for those that like feeling that eerie sensation while they read year round.
I knew going in that this was a sequel and I have not yet read Chasing the Boogeyman. I just couldn’t pass up on requesting the arc on NetGalley. This can be read as a stand-alone but I think you will want to run out and read Chasing the Boogeyman like I do.
I also knew this was a fictional story but it is so believable as a true crime novel that I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn’t real. I loved the way that the story includes photos and interviews to feel authentic. I also loved the truth that was mixed in (ie. comments about working with Stephen King and names of family). It reminded me of The Dark Tower series when Stephen King wrote himself into the story. That was one of my favorite parts of the series and I feel the same about it in this book.
I loved the uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach that the story gives you. I felt like I was watching the security footage with Richard, running from Henry with a young Richard and sitting around the bonfire at Chizapalooza. The writing is so captivating and I could not put this book down.

3.75 stars rounding up. I really enjoyed this but I feel like the first book in the series was better. Some of the details in this seemed far fetched.
