Miss Eliza's English Kitchen has a lot of potential, but the conclusion leaves readers with too many questions. The story captures the role food and cooking play in helping people connect and the creative power of preparing food. The author does not shy away from exploring historical details of the hardships faced by the poor, how servants experienced different forms of abuse, and the societal limits placed on single women. The plot centers on a spinster and her servant; such relationships were outside societal conventions of the time. Readers experience these women's transformations as they push back and stand up for what they want, such as autonomy. The book falls flat with the sudden epilogue that breezes over the later part of this relationship as the two women work on a cookbook. There are years of events and recipe development missing from the plot.
