This book was a bummer just for the sake of being a bummer. If you are into that, then this is for you. I was looking for something with a bit less of reality so it didn’t strike home for me...

DNF: weird...... i hv some curiosity to finish but i jst cldnt get into it... too detached n gross for the sake of being gross it seems
I hated this. I almost never abandon books but I just couldn't finish it. Why have a book full of stories from "different authors" and write them all the same way? To me this was a great opportunity for Palahniuk to try out different writing styles to make them all unique and interesting. Instead everything, poems and stories, felt the exact same. Not to mention all of this content is gross and shocking for the sake of being gross and shocking. I didn't finish for the same reason I don't watch the news. I want adventure and intrigue when I read books. Now, I realize it tells you in the description that these stories are pretty horrifying, but I read horror regularly and this wasn't it. This was essentially a snuff book. Am I supposed to believe that all of these people are this terrible? That they all engage in grotesque activities and lawlessness? I would have responded completely different to this book if just a few of these people were ordinary and got mixed up in the retreat by accident. Reading Saint Gut-frees story was great. Shocking and funny. A little less so with Mother Nature, even less with Miss America...so on and so forth until I asked myself, WTF am I reading? If it wasn't all so obnoxious, I would have called this book boring. Maybe I missed out on some explanations later on in the stories but I wasn't willing to continue and find out.

I thought this book was very interesting and some of the stories were absolutely amazingly grotesque. I think some of the descriptions of the women in the book were a bit problematic and I do understand that some of the characters, if not all of them, are supposed to be unlikeable, but it was a hard part for me to get past. Overall, it was an interesting read, but I didn't find myself excited to read it or as entertained as I was hoping to be. Wonderfully written though, just not for me.
