what I learned from reading this book? that the people sitting next to you on the plane will give you very odd looks after reading over your shoulder for a few minutes.
Reading this book was like watching reality TV: I found myself compulsively reading, mesmerized, pulled along by the desire to know what terrible thing these people are going to do to themselves/each other next.
Be warned: this novel is not for the squeamish. There is (in no particular order)--infanticide, murder, cannibalism, self-mutilation, people boiled and eaten alive, rape, disembowelment, etc.

Per chi non lo conoscesse, questo è lo stesso autore di Fight Club, il cui film rende l'idea, e di altri capolavori come Invisible Monster e Soffocare, meno bello Survivor e Ninna Nanna, da cancellare Diary.
Dopo questo breve excursus veniamo a questa sua ultima fatica, nonchè quella dalle pagine più numerose. La storia è presto detta, alcune persone rispondono ad un annuncio per un "Ritiro per scrittori" dove avrebbero potuto, in tutta tranquillità, dedicarsi a scrivere il capolavoro della loro intera esistenza.
Da questo punto in poi il libro si biforca, da una parte c'è la storia dei partecipanti, della loro lenta consunzione per inedia (per diventare personaggi di un reality hanno dato fondo alle provviste, distrutto la caldaia e otturato i bagni), dall'altra le loro storie, raccontate a turno, dalle quali si evince che alcuni fra loro avevano riposto all'annuncio perchè avevano ucciso qualcun altro.In questo clima oppressivo e claustrofobico, il solito Palahniuk dà il meglio di sè, anche se proprio all'inizio, uno dei racconti è così brutale che ho smesso per una settimana di leggere il libro, non avevo lo stomaco per riprenderlo in mano.
Come anche nel libro della Nothomb, precedentemente recensito su questa stessa rete, il paradosso del reality show, la ricerca del cattivo a tutti i costi, la distruzione e la rinascita per assurgere al paradiso mediatico, è descritta in tutte le sue forme e dimensioni.
Ma questo non è un libro per tutti, intanto perchè l'autore riesce ad essere veramente indigesto in alcune sue spiegazioni particolareggiate e dettagliate, e poi perchè è comunque da affrontare su diversi piani di lettura.
Se vi capita leggete prima qualcos'altro, comincerei da invisible monster, passerei da soffocare e arriverei a fight club. Dopodichè, se avete visto che il genere vi può interessare attaccherei con questo e non vi spaventate al racconto di San Vuotabudella, è solo l'inizio.

Borderline 4 star, and if you like Chuck’s work I think it’s some of his best from what I’ve read- I just wish a) he’d focused on/expanded a few of the better stories and b) gotten rid of/changed the frame story. Those names are just- what? Mrs. Sneezy? Mate, I can’t take your realistic horror/gore seriously if you’re gonna Snicket it the rest of the time. There was some legitimately gross imagery here, some of the plots really do work, but the book is just too scattered and back and forth with the nonsense name backdrop. Somethin about writers locked in a house, idk. They die and tell stories. It’s all very vague and I just read it. Some of the lack of focus is on me, but it’s also way more fractured than it should be. Just share the scary stories, if you’re gonna frame it frame it well, because some of the writing was actually scary af, it’s just surrounded by too much meh.
I struggled with this one. Not my favorite Palanuik book. I did enjoy the twist at the very end. I didn't quit in the middle of this one b/c I'm so stubborn. Did not really seem worth the time it took me to get through it.
dude. i was sitting in the bus station reading one of the first chapters with the graphic nontraditional masturbatory descriptions and got dizzy and almost passed out. holy shit. while i was almost passing out from the graphic content, i was also laughing my ass off. anyone who can make me laugh and get incredibly grossed out at the same time has talent. i love this author, i think he is very creative and adds so many weird twists to the plot.
This is absolutely not what I thought it was going to be... I believe a lot of the book was just for gross out factor. The reason this book gets 3 stars is because there were a handful of short stories that were well written and drew me in.
