This book was gross and raunchy but also super dark and depressing. Only took the .5 off because while the poems and short stories were attention grabbing, the actual chapters of the present time were sometimes really boring and I could never tell who was narrating them. All in all though, quality book. And if you value your sanity, don’t read “Guts”

With it being a collection of short stories, one would think this would be an easier read, but I cannot disagree with that statement more. This book had moments that had me glued to the page, but they were far and in between. I think the idea of having short stories connected by a holistic plot is a very creative and innovative idea (there were almost 20 characters all with their own stories), but it makes for a rather arduous effort, especially considering the dark themes and graphic descriptions of death, violence, murder, and cannibalism. I think the over arching theme that humans create and become addicted to their own suffering is legitimate, and there is also a hint of Lord of Flies given that most of the book is people doing disturbing and terrible things when held in captivity away from society. I don't know if I recommend this book, but it was a good criticism of our world. It has a very unsatisfying finish; I kept working through it hoping there would be a good ending, but it was just the same idea all through out. Read if you like disturbing imagery and if you think human beings are all hypocrites taking joy in their own suffering.
