As someone born in 1993 who lived through the Harry Potter boom, Tumblr, fanfiction, and more, I absolutely loved this story for its nostalgic vibes. It reminded me of so many experiences from my own journey and showed me how someone else processed similar moments differently. However, I felt it lacked depth in explaining complex topics, such as healthy relationships and sex in LGBTQ+ contexts and what vaginismus is. I also wished it delved more into her conversation with her aunt about her response to whether her feelings were internalized misogyny.

This book has sparked a lot of controversy and has even been suggested for banning. I don't think it should be banned; it's an important story. Even though to my liking, it missed some topics, I still learned a lot from Maia's experiences. That said, I don't think this book is suitable for elementary or even middle school kids.

Overall: ⭐⭐⭐ 3
