A interesting overview of the broader dark net, including tor and the deep web but also a lot of different areas and subcultures of the surface web that are more or less hidden and inaccessible. A lot of very cool history and original research on the beginnings of things like bitcoin and the silk road, as well as the subcultures from which they emerged. Also a cool trace of the path of internet trolling and flaming as it developed from newsgroups to what it is today. Definitely some very disturbing things about darker sides of the internet, so certainly some TW / CW there.
I thought this book would be about the "dark net," otherwise known as the "deep web." It's the part of the internet not reachable with a normal browser. Instead, the author redefined the phrase "dark net" for himself to mean the parts of the internet that manifest humans' dark side. It wasn't exactly what I was interested in.
This took me over a year to get through. I read it off and on and a lot of it was super interesting but it was also a lot wordier than was needed.
One of two books used to support my HS senior thesis “How the U.S Government can Combat the Dark Web.” I think about Red Rooms at least once a month. The most research I have done on cryptocurrency and the most I ever care to do. Though I recognize both the pros and cons depending on the situation.
This is a lot less about the dark net than it is just about the regular ol net.
Frustratingly titled, as only a couple of chapters really talk about the dark web at all and the bulk of the book is just about the internet generally and some of its metaphorically darker corners. But it’s a pretty fair introduction to some of those things, obviously with it being about 11 years old now some of those numbers will be different and the crypto currency stuff has advanced and become even more of an obvious threat to privacy and utility in that time (imo he was already approaching it quite credulously) but most of the rest is still pretty informative and seems to be relevant.
The internet is TERRIFYING. I'll stay on the surface of it, thanks.
To tech geeks 'dark net' means something very specific, from Wikipedia: "A darknet (or dark net) is an overlay network that can only be accessed with specific software, configurations, or authorization, often using non-standard communications protocols and ports."
This book covers this a bit (Tor Hidden Services, The Silk Road) but is mostly about the darker corners of the regular old internet we all now and use everyday. Things like the culture of online trolls, pro-anorexia web sites, child porn/abuse, and cam girls (and guys).
