When I was teaching 10th grade English, I disliked having to teach Huck Finn, so I was eager to read this. This was everything I wish Hick Finn had been, and so much that I think Twain would write if he was writing today. If I ever go back to 10th grade English, this will be one of my must reads!

As a cathartic and satirical revenge story, this hit the mark, but as a well-written, complex story it did not. I felt that James was not nearly developed enough for a book that is meant to tell his story. The simple writing style and plot kept the book moving very quickly at the expense of depth and connection. Overall, it’s not a bad book and I think it’s a worthwhile story to retell. I just wish it had been more character-driven because I think that would have made it a more engaging and impactful story.

Remarkable, like nothing else I’ve ever read. Everett has grabbed hold of the historic Twain tradition and made it his own— bringing brilliant humor, pathos, and most importantly humanity to Jim—James.

This was a well-written and engaging story. Jim won me over and I found myself rooting for him every step of the way. I look forward to reading more books by Percival Everett.

It was outstanding in every way. The only note I have, not to be cliche, is that I wish it was slightly longer! I wish there was a bit more complexity to the plot itself, however this is a story that really shines on character development and it shines in its current form. I will definitely be looking for more books from Mr. Percival Everett!
