This one surprised me - in a good way. James is a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, through the eyes of Jim, an enslaved man who escapes his master. Although the topic was unsettling, (slavery and abuse) it’s a needed reminder about our country’s history. Jim and Huck were such a wonderful duo to follow and I enjoyed their conversations and banter.
I’ve never read the original Huckleberry Finn, so I’ll definitely put it on my TBR now.

An intriguing and interesting take on Mark Twain's story. Doesn't stray too far from the feel of the original and brings plenty of new parts to keep it entertaining.
I did feel that the last third was incredibly rushed and the last couple of chapters made for a very abrupt ending.
The main character didn't go through much of a transformation for me for it to leave a lasting impression.
The writing was brilliantly done though and I'll definitely check out the author's other works.

This book reminded me of Kevin Can F Himself in the shifts between Jim performing for white people and being himself around other slaves, especially how Huck notices the cracks. An incredibly moving story with serious themes that still managed to have some of the hijinks from the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn books I remember. I also see a lot of themes echoed in American Fiction, based on Erasure.

My pithy one line review: Will this usurp My Immortal as the most infamous fanfiction?
Now to get serious: This is definitely a novel I would recommend others to read, primarily, because it is simultaneously so unbelievable and believable.
