this sjit was so sad, so sad because this was someone's life. living in a war ridden country takes a certain toll on one that nearly you lose it all — sadly (and realistically) in this book, it was an eight year old boy. i tgink that this is a must read atleast ONCE in one's lifetime... there's obviously no villains in this book but obviously it was his fucking baba. THAT MAN WAS WICKED.

This book was beautifully written, but my gosh was it sad. I cried a few times throughout the story, but I would still recommend it.

i don’t care how many great reviews this has or the fact that all social media is giving the highest praises for this book. i didn’t care for it nor would i recommend it.
i did like some moments of the book and appreciated the writing style though to be fair, the writing did feel targeted to young audiences (i can see this being a popular high school read and even an important one for that age).
but i don’t care for bildungsroman genres nor for any of the graphic scenes including: child on child sexual assault, pedophilia, parent with cancer or the suicide attempt.
i did appreciate that the author gave life to afghanistan that is not seen in western media and felt truly heartbroken as the story continued to darken, even though i knew what was to come from historical context of the time.
