I love the Mercy Thompson Series. This is the sixth installment. It is the culmination of a lot of story arcs in the series. The Mercy, Adam, Samuel love triangle has been resolved with Mercy and Adam marrying after Samuel finds a more fitting companion than Mercy could be for him. Thus, Adam and Mercy are happily on their honeymoon away from all the fae, vampire, and werewolf hangers on that usually complicate their life. Now, finally we get more background on Coyote and Mercy’s Native American heritage. This was a breath of fresh air after the fifth book. I really enjoyed the Native American legends brought to life.

Third reading: Every time I read this one, I like it more and more!

Update: The second time through I enjoyed this one a LOT more! I love that Adam is actually a main character. It was kind of nice to have a change of scenery. I did miss some of the regular characters, but I know they’ll be back!

2012 reading: have read all of the books in the series, leading up to this one. I have LOVED every single one of them. This one was a bit different; a lot of the normal characters only make very brief occurrences. But I was not disappointed with this book! It held my attention the entire way through! I'd recommend it. 3/5

I'd rate this around a 3.75 to 4, but I'm rounding up because I did enjoy it overall. It falls somewhere between filler and essential to the series. Meeting Mercy's dad and seeing her find answers to that unfamiliar side of her was a highlight for me. However, there were some moments that felt off, particularly in how Indigenous people and culture were portrayed and described. The comparisons to autism also felt out of place and the appearance of the disabled boy in the beginning didn’t balance it out. Additionally, while Coyote was well-developed, other introduced characters lacked depth. This is something that I feel that the author also struggled with in the first book. It always takes her another book or two to paint a picture of the side characters.

I probably enjoyed this one more the first time around. This time I found it a bit too slow. Mostly because I missed the usual cast of characters and I always think this series is stronger when Mercy is with her people. Poor Mercy does take a literal beating in this one, several of them in fact, and I had to wonder why Stefan didn't give her a bit of his blood to help speed up the healing process. It's not like he wouldn't! Still, it was a decent enough story that dragged just a little too much for my liking.

Wow there were some big revelations in this one. We understand her father, who and what he was. We meet Coyote and his siblings. It was genuinely so very good!

Normally I like this series, but this installment was a chore. No real mystery, just here's your monster and here's the good guys killing it.

Good story. I liked seeing Adam and Mercy away from the pack and their friends. But this story confused me quite often.
