I had to let out a very, very deep sigh when this book was finally finished. What have I done to myself? It's a miracle I didn't DNF this book. This was so mega depressing and boring? I'm never trusting booktok ever again. If you would read chapter 1 and the last chapter, you would understand as much as I do now as I plowed through the whole book. Can I have my time back plssss??

Unusual writing style, at times I thought it was telling and not showing. I liked the dialogues written without inverted commas. I sometimes struggled to empathise with the characters, which, again, makes me think Sally Rooney was more telling than showing. The mere depictions of Marianne and Connell's behaviour and feelings, however, were able to get to me, enough so to make me find them relatable. Moreover, I found the ending very rushed, restricted in not more than the last chapter. Overall not bad, probably not for me, but I would recommend it.

being fr, if the show did not that mean as much to me as it does and I hadn't seen it six times - this probably would have been dnf

I feel like it was only because I watched the show that I followed and could picture what was going on most of the time, which has made me think about reading book versions of shows/movies I have seen already in the future. The writing style of this, I know is not for everyone, as this is very routinely spoken about online, but I am not sure I can comment on that without reading another book by Rooney as I have already said my attachment is different to this novel. That being said, I did have to add my own speech marks and notes sometimes to follow who was speaking because I was not sure who and what was going on. If Paul Mescal ever does an audiobook version of this - I will pop off. I think without the aids of the visualisation of the way the characters are, I would have struggled to understand the positions they were both in and the way that they acted, because in the book I found myself wanting more information about them.

The way that the political landscape is explored within this without feeling like a forced-in-your-face topic is done really well, in my opinion. The dynamic between Connell and Marianne and their class backgrounds, as well as how Connells mum worked for her family is just explained well as well as talking about wider societal issues such as Gaza and abortion. For that - this book is great.

Experiencing life and love through the eyes of these characters felt intrusive as well as beautiful. Made me reflect a lot on the meaning of love and the role of attachment and dependence within. Recognized myself and people in my surroundings in the protagonists. Read this in one afternoon, the first book to have engrossed me completely in a long time.

The writing was addictive and page-turning, but the character’s lives get progressively bleaker with no true resolution.

I’m still trying to understand what lesson can be taken from this book about two struggling people in a fairly messed up relationship?
