it's the odyssey. i'm very pleased with wilson's translations, always, and have very little to say. someone brought up to me how she minces her words around the topics of rape & sexual assault that come up frequently in this book. the only time it is clarified outright is what ajax did to cassandra. i think she's prioritizing the translation over modern concepts of things in those moments, like odyssey's relations with both circe and calypso. but it's definitely my main point of critique. otherwise, excellent

Reading this was an odious odyssey but I ended up liking the last third a lot (honestly don't really remember the first 2/3) minus the last two pages.

This was self-mandatory, not just because it is THE OG epic adventure story, but because there’s something to be said about reading an ancient classic, and Emily Wilson’s translation made it incredibly enjoyable and accessible! It’s rich, full, but not complex, and you’ll discover many themes still relevant today, as well as recognize Homer’s direct influence across lifetimes of creative mediums.
