I usually avoid "super sad" books, but I was recommended this book and I'm so glad I picked it up. I think this author has a special talent for making you care about every single character (especially through the main character here) and I really enjoyed the pacing, spending a long time in "normality", relatively, before Sashi navigates the political upheaval of the 1980s as a young adult, which turns everything you've been immersed in on its head after you've grown to care for it. Even though I ended up picking up this book across multiple months after letting the loan lapse, I had very little trouble keeping track of the characters because I cared for all of them. Really good audiobook reader as well!

this was really excellent - it's unfortunate i had to kind of rush reading the second half of it (due to expiring library loan rip) but man,,, it was still really powerful.
