Liked this a lot. Was expecting explicit horror but it's not that at all.

There are some images that will stick in my head. Snow, Crabs, Toddler-Hunting.

There are some ideas that appear multiple times: women with suppressed desires, chubby armed children, but it's not repetitive. Their conflicts, and the physical images that mirror them are very sharp. Ants swarming on meat, snowstorms, piles of shells and bone.

"Once, in science class, they'd had a lesson about silkworms, and with a scalpel the teacher had sliced open a cocoon. Akiko took one look at the faintly squirming pupa--a filthy dark thing, slowly binding itself up in thread issuing from its own body--and knew she was seeing the embodiment of the feelings that afflicted her."

I just wanted something faster paced at the time. I really enjoyed the quality of the writing, just not the pace for my mood.

Incredible. How had I not heard of this book or this author before? I wanted to stay with these characters and these stories so much longer than the brevity of their medium allowed.
